North Wales Trip June 1st

June started very cold and windy as Brenda, Steve, Fiona and David joined me on a day out in North Wales.
It was Steve's birthday treat from Brenda and his friends and Steve wanted to see Redstart, Pied and Spotted Flycatcher. Starting fairly early we arrived in the NW moors to the sight of Black Grouse still showing well. This was a bonus bird for the day and with superb views of Meadow Pipit and Skylark  (down to 5 feet) and plenty of Stonechats, the drive to the woods warmed us up.

A quick stop off before we entered the woods gave us Tree Pipit calling and perching high in the trees but the winds kept the Grasshopper Warbler I knew was in the area, down and quiet.

BLACK GROUSE
Before we parked the car Steve spotted a Redstart darting across the road its red tail flashing in the now bright sunshine. A short climb through the wood with Blackcap and Garden Warbler calling we eventually came across a beautiful Male Redstart . Pied Flycatcher could also be heard calling but no sightings were had..
REDSTART

After a coffee and tea break a short walk down the lane with Chiff Chaff and Willow Warbler vying for our attention the sight of a Pied Flycatcher put a spring in our step.
PIED FLYCATCHER

Next a drive down to the coast and after a good lunch and soon we were enjoying the sight and sounds of Little Terns flying above our heads. These are truly beautiful birds and we are lucky to have them breeding in our neck of the "coast" !!
LITTLE TERN
Ringed Plover and Dunlin put on a good show before we headed off back to the Wirral for Spotted Flycatcher. Alas this was not to be seen as we were told when we arrived that the nest had been destroyed that morning by Squirrels. Still Whitethroat, Black Tailed Godwit, Redshank and the delightful sight of Avocet's with their young all over the reserve meant the day was not spoiled. Then to cap the day two Spoonbills were seen out on the scrape.
